Fred Carpenter - Owner

Fred started violin lessons at age 7, and began his professional music career at 17. He recorded his 1st solo album “CUT LOOSE” with Mark O’ Connor at age 20. In 1980 Fred joined the Tony Rice Unit, and recorded 2 albums, ”Still Inside” and “Backwaters”. During this time, Fred also studied three years as an apprentice with Loveland Violin Shop in Santa Rosa, CA. He learned extensive repair and restoration techniques, as well as the skills and knowledge required to run a shop.
In 1987, Fred moved to Nashville and began touring with Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band. That same year, he opened “The Violin Shop”. Fred continued to tour with various artists including Ronnie Milsap, Suzy Bogguss, George Strait, and Paul Overstreet. In 1992, Fred recorded his second album, “In The Stillness ” with Russ Barenberg and Roy Huskey Jr. Fred spent the next 14 years building what has become Nashville’s premier violin facility. During this time he attended numerous violin auctions, studied violin history and identification in depth, and became the players choice for violin and bow repairs. Fred is one of the top bow rehairing specialist in the world. He also focuses heavy attention on buying and selling fine violins and bows.


Vance Davenport - Director of Operations

Vance has been with the Violin Shop since 2005. He comes with an impressive list of qualifications. In addition to his high level of musicianship, Vance is a gifted communicator with an extensive computer and networking background. He is extremely helpful in managing several areas within the Violin Shop.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Vance started playing fiddle at age 10 and toured for many years with his family band, "The Davenport Family".

By age 19, Vance moved to Nashville and toured for over three years with George Jones (“The Possum”). Before moving to Las Vegas in 1992, Vance recorded his first solo album entitled, "Just BeCuz". While in Las Vegas, Vance performed in the country show "Country Tonite" (at the Aladdin Hotel) for almost six years. Vance also has played on sound tracks for many shows in Las Vegas and Pigeon Forge, some of which are still running today. Vance has also performed with Ricochet, Trent Willmon, Lonestar, and most recently, Sara Evans. Vance lives in Nashville with his beautiful wife - Amanda and their two sons, Austin & Rylan.

Brian Christianson - Repair & Setup Specialist

Brian Christianson has been with the Violin Shop since 2002.
In 2000, he earned a degree in violin repair at Minnesota State College. This program focused on traditional methods of instrument repair and setup, as well as the basic techniques of violin making. Brian spends a lot of time restoring and rebuilding older violins. He has also become very well educated about violins and continues to assist customers with exceptional setups and repair work.

Brian has been playing fiddle since age eight, and mandolin since age ten. In 1997, he was named Minnesota’s Top Country Instrumentalist and several times he has been the Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Since moving to Nashville in 2000, Brian’s playing has grown to include many styles including bluegrass, swing, and jazz. Brian is a very gifted musician and has released an outstanding solo CD. He is currently playing with Mike Snider's band.
